ABOUT DR. CHRISTINE WOODBURY

Dr. Christine Webb Woodbury teaches violin and viola with the Suzuki Collaborative of the Cincinnati Public Schools at Sands Montessori, with UC’s College Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department, at the Hyde Park School, and at St. Ursula Villa.

Originally from New Jersey, CW received a BA in music from Smith College. She has also earned a Masters and Doctorate in viola performance from UC’s College Conservatory of Music, studying with Dr. Catharine Carroll Lees and Masao Kawasaki.

CW has completed nine units of Violin training with the Suzuki Association of the Americas and six units of viola training, plus supplemental units. Her trainers have included William Preucil, Anne Montzka Smelser, Sarah Montzka, Geri Arnold, and Joanne Melvin.

CW has performed with numerous Cincinnati area ensembles, including the Butler Philharmonic, the Cincinnati Philharmonic, the Queen City Opera, and the Kentucky Symphony Orchestra.

CW embraces the Suzuki philosophy that every child can be a successful musician, and she strongly believes that every child deserves a quality musical education. She teaches with the goal of giving her students a love of music and tools to overcome any challenge in life.

TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

What is Suzuki?

I believe every child is capable of great things, and music gives us important skills for life. My teaching is informed by my years of study with many teachers, my performing experience, and the Suzuki philosophy. The Suzuki, or "mother-tongue" method, aims to help children learn music the same way they naturally learn music language, and so emphasizes learning by ear, a positive environment, early start, and lots of repetition. For more information about Suzuki you can go to https://suzukiassociation.org/

I typically start students between the ages of 4 and 7, but I do sometimes take older beginners. I require younger students (and highly encourage older students!) to attend regular group classes in addition to individual lessons, as group classes are so helpful for performing experience, learning music faster, playing with other musicians, learning to read music, and having fun!
